How to care for your pool with hot weather and high temperatures

Things are heating up...literally. July brings hot weather, and as the temperature rises, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a dip in a cool, crystal-clear pool. However, maintaining your pool during hot weather requires a bit of extra attention to ensure it stays pristine and inviting throughout the summer months. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to care for your pool when the mercury climbs!

Monitor Water Level

Your pool is constantly losing water to evaporation, but when temperatures soar so does your water loss. With hot weather, your pool may lose half an inch of water per day! It is absolutely crucial to check you water levels frequently and refill your pool as needed to make sure your water level stays about half way up the skimmer.

Test Water More Frequently

Ensuring your pool water chemistry remains balanced is crucial during hot weather. Since you may be refilling your pool more often, it is more likely for your pool's balance to get thrown off. Also, the sun's UV rays can quickly degrade chlorine and other sanitizers in unprotected water, making regular testing and maintenance more important than ever.

To keep your pool sanitized effectively in hot conditions, follow these steps:

  1. Test your water at least 1–2 times per week, or at least every time you refill your pool.
  2. Maintain a consistent chlorine level (Free Available Chlorine, FAC) of 1–3 parts per million (ppm) by keeping your chlorinator stocked with chlorine tablets.
  3. Use stabilized chlorine tablets containing Cyanuric Acid (CYA) daily. CYA acts like sunscreen for chlorine, protecting it from UV degradation. Regular use helps maintain CYA levels within the recommended range (30–50 ppm). If your CYA levels are low after refilling your pool, use stabilizer to raise them.

Prevent Algae Blooms

Since algae loves warm weather it is especially important to prevent algae blooms during the hot summer months. We think the easiest way to do that is to add Simple Scoop  to your pool each week, which will remove contaminants and prevent algae growth. If you choose not to use Simple Scoop, shock and use algaecide in your pool weekly to remove contaminants and prevent algae growth.

Well there you have it! Enjoy your pool oasis while beating the heat this season!
